The McKeesport-based Consortium for Public Education is looking for adult volunteers who can help students from three schools in the Mon and Turtle Creek valleys think about their futures, see the importance of doing well in school and give them a window into the world of jobs and careers.
Adults would serve as mentors to middle school students in the McKeesport Area, Clairton City or Woodland Hills school districts through the Be a Middle School Mentor program, a United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania program run in Mon Valley schools by the Consortium for Public Education.
Based in the RIDC Industrial Center of McKeesport, the consortium is a nonprofit organization working with more than 40 school districts across western Pennsylvania on initiatives designed to strengthen and broaden school leadership, engage community and empower students.
Be a Middle School Mentor is the largest school-based mentoring program in the region, according to Program Director Gina Barrett. The program doesn’t start working with students until October, but Barrett is trying to recruit people before the beginning of the school year.
