Rabies baiting slated in Allegheny County

Rabies exposure is declining in Allegheny County thanks to a partnership between the United States Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services and the Allegheny County Health Department.
The USDA and ACHD will have employees and volunteers distributing vaccine-containing baits throughout the county from Aug. 5-21.
The vaccine packets are coated or placed inside of a fishmeal block — a treat to raccoons — and then dropped from low-flying airplanes or helicopters, or by local teams on foot or in vehicles.
The helicopters will be flying in north-south transects that go over residential areas. As the transects are close together to ensure sufficient baiting, residents may see helicopters moving slowly over the same area multiple times.
