Dark clouds hovered over the Mechanic Street Playground in California Wednesday night, giving the impression that rain showers would spoil the J. Budd Grebb Memorial Summer Basketball League girls championship game.
The weather held off and drops didn’t fall from the sky, but Dax Thomas State Farm certainly made it rain from the floor early.
Second-seeded State Farm used a big first quarter run and a stout defensive effort to fend off No. 1 AMD Industries, 29-21, and claim the league championship for the third time in the last four years and first time under head coach Tom Rodriguez.
State Farm (9-3) outscored AMD, 16-0, in the first quarter and limited its opponent to just four second quarter points to carry a commanding 20-4 lead into halftime.
