Nathanael Stevens, an area youth pastor, is one step closer to bringing a first-of-its kind sports team to the area — the Mon Valley Rowing Club.
In September, Stevens announced his idea of starting a youth rowing team.
Just by word of mouth, his idea quickly generated support and has since made his dream a reality.
In January, Stevens got a board of directors together and received nonprofit status.
“There is usually a six month turnaround for that kind of thing, especially because we filed our paperwork during the government shut down,” he said. “But, we got our response back within a month. We definitely feel like God has been in the mix and making things happen for us.”
The group’s first information meeting and fundraising rally is set for 7 tonight at Smitty’s Marina in Lower Speers. It is open to the public.
He is hoping the event will attract potential young rowers – of all experience levels – and their families to share the benefits of what his future team will offer.
