School donations come with surprise

The classrooms of South Allegheny Elementary School won’t have to worry about running out of pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, markers and erasers this year, thanks to the Port Vue Police Department.
Every year, according to Lt. David Petruski, teachers at the school have a few students in their classrooms whose parents are on a fixed or limited income and can’t afford to buy basic essentials for their children.
Petruski said he learned in 2015 that teachers often end up buying extra supplies for the classroom because “the school district’s budget is often tight.”
That inspired him to start a school supply drive, sponsored by the police department. He placed collection boxes in numerous businesses and government buildings around Port Vue and asked area residents to donate school supplies.
