James D. Day – Monongahela
James D. Day, 87, Monongahela, Victory Hill, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, in his home. He was born Aug. 31, 1931 in Donora, the son of Louis M. and Mary Pribish Day. Jim retired in 1993 from Power Piping Company in Donora after 25 years of employment and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War. He attended umpire school in Williamsport and was the district administrator for District 9. Jim began his career as an umpire in 1963 and umpired until the 90s, working in the Mon Valley and surrounding areas. One of his finest experiences was umpiring the 1987 Little League World Series. He was a very active member of the First Christian Church in Monongahela, where he was a trustee and deacon. He was also a member of the Carroll American Legion James C. Ford Post 949, the Sutman Yohe VFW Post 1409 and the Victory Hill Social Club. He is survived by his wife, Virginia A. Buchta Day, with whom he celebrated 66 years of marriage on April 8, 2019; daughter, Laurie M. Cialone and husband Angelo of Monongahela; two sons, James T. Day and wife Patti of Monongahela, Timothy E. Day and wife Billie Jo of New Eagle; four grandchildren, Jason Cialone, Krista, Tyler and Alyssa Day; and great-granddaughter, Falyn Cialone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, James T. Day II, who passed away Jan. 20, 1997; and his brother, Robert “Tubby” Day, who passed away Jan. 12, 2001. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, at FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 W. Main St., Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019, with the Rev. Mark Sholtis officiating. Interment will follow in the Monongahela Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.
