Eliciting cheers and applause from those in attendance, the Jefferson Hills Zoning Board voted unanimously Monday night to uphold an appeal from Jefferson Hills residents who want to block the construction of a hospital complex in the borough by medical giant UPMC.
The vote puts a temporary hold on UPMC’s plans to build a 225,000-square-foot, three-story, 63-bed medical complex off Elliot Road and Route 51, one mile from Allegheny Health Network’s Jefferson Hospital, which has operated in Jefferson Hills since 1973.
The complex would include a hospital, clinic, office space, 700 parking spaces and a helipad that operates continuously.
After the vote, zoning board chairman David Parme said the board will not explain its decision.
“We’re not going to discuss this,” he told the crowd. “We’re just following the procedure.”
