Elizabeth borough officials are considering options to make Second Street a safer place to live and to shop.
Resident Robin Schmidt told borough council Tuesday that her daughter and grandchild were inches away from being killed over the weekend when a speeding vehicle struck her daughter’s open car door as she was removing a child from a car seat.
“If she had taken one step back I would have lost her and Catalina. The car hit her door so hard it bent it backward,” Schmidt said. “It was so loud they came up from the fire station.”
Her older granddaughter was injured earlier this month when a hose broke in the rear engine compartment of her school bus, causing second-degree burns on her foot. Schmidt said she has lost car mirrors in the past, but this time it could have been family members.
“There was a truck parked on the other side, which made it very tight” said Chad Rager, who is both a borough councilman and fire chief.
