Members of the Rostraver West Newton Emergency Services will have a different look for the month of October.
To help bring attention to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, more than 100 paid and volunteer staff members will wear special T-shirts that show the team’s support for those who have survived breast cancer and for those who continue to fight for a cure.
This year marks the second year in a row the crew will wear the shirts.
“We had an amazing response last year,” said Michael Stangroom, director of operations for the EMS. “We didn’t think it would be as popular as it was. It’s a horrible disease and we see how many people are effected by it. Everyone can relate to this.”
The service’s vehicles are also emblazoned with pink cancer ribbons.
The gray and pink shirts are also available for purchase by the public, but Stangroom pointed out that supplies are limited.
Held annually every October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
It also aims to educate people about the importance of early screening and testing. The campaign starts on Oct. 1 and ends on Oct. 31 every year.
