Some EF students start the day with relaxation exercises

Some students in the Elizabeth Forward School District are opting to start their day destressing — taking a class in mindfulness as their physical education elective.
Just five weeks into the 18-week semester, instructors Melissa Benedict and Kaila Miele are already seeing changes, and more importantly, so are their students.
“They just seem so much more relaxed. They say openly what they are taking from the class,” Miele said. “They are taking out of class and taking it home. … A lot of the kids say they’ll do a deep relaxation before bed to feel less stressed.”
The district piloted the program over the past three years, offering mindfulness as part of the regular physical education program before offering it this year as an elective for an entire semester.
