After nine years of application efforts, Rostraver Central Fire Department was awarded a grant worth almost half-million dollars to go toward acquiring a new fire engine.
The department received $495,238 from the Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters grant program for vehicle acquisition. Assistant fire chief Justin Shawley said the funds are long-awaited, and that the department simply “got lucky” with this year’s award.
“I think just a cumulative aging of equipment and an aligning of the stars, and different factors coming together that really made things work this year,” he said. “We’ve always had a commitment to making sure our people are trained and certified to the national standards that the government looks for. That’s definitely something that helps, and things just came together this year favorably for us.”
