Game of the Week: McGuffey awaits Charleroi

When the Charleroi Cougars opened the season getting spanked by Washington, 42-14, there were some who wondered what type of impact the Cougars would have this season in Class 2A’s Interstate Conference after sharing the title with the Prexies a year ago.
Five weeks and five wins later, Charleroi’s effect is that the Cougars are still in the mix for at least a share of the conference crown.
However, if the Cougars (5-1, 4-1) have their eye on accomplishing that, there is no debating the importance of tonight’s showdown at McGuffey (7-0, 5-0). If the Cougars can top the Highlanders tonight and the Prexies (7-0, 4-0) stub their toe once against Southmoreland tonight or McGuffey next week, Charleroi will find itself in a three-way tie for the title with a win over oft-beaten Brownsville next week.
“We are playing well in spots,” said Charleroi coach Lance Getsy. “I think it’s just a matter of players who did not have much game experience got that experience each week and we have been playing as one. We have played as a team and don’t depend on any one player. Our kids have learned to depend on each other with everybody doing his job.
“When you work hard, good things can happen and you get to play in games like this one. We’re very excited.”
