There aren’t many schools where the halls are adorned with busts of Dracula, Frankenstein and Jason Voorhees and the rooms are aglow with candelabras.
But Tom Savini’s Special Make-up Effects Program in Monessen features a cornucopia of creatures, a hall of fame of Hollywood horror and a multitude of movie monsters.
The school, a program of the Douglas Education Center, is prepping for its annual open house Oct. 24. Prospective students near and far can begin the process of making their dreams — or nightmares — of working on television and movie sets come true.
“We have graduates working on every movie and TV show that’s out there,” said Kevin Fear, Douglas Education Center’s chief marketing officer. “You don’t need an art background. We teach you everything. We’ve had people come in here with zero skills and they go on to work in films.”
