ArcelorMittal listens to feedback from the public

A community meeting held by ArcelorMittal drew about a dozen members of the public to Monessen High School Thursday evening.
Division manager Randy Shelton gave a presentation on the plant operations. He reported on environmental testing, saying the company has met or exceeded state Department of Environmental Protection and consent decree guidelines for removing hydrogen sulfide gas.
Shelton noted that at peak operation, the plant produces about 1,000 tons of coke per day made from 1,400 tons of coal.
“Coke is a raw material that is used in the making of steel,” Shelton explained.
