Domestic violence awareness month observed

October is usually decked out in pink ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but it is also designated with a purple ribbon for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
One in every four women experience domestic violence, according to Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania. One in seven men are victims, and one in three teens report dating violence in their relationships.
In 1981, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence designated a Day of Unity to connect battered women’s advocates across the country. The day evolved into a month of awareness building.
DVSSP serves people in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties, providing resources such as counseling and housing.
Alexandra Brooks, prevention education coordinator for DVSSP, said there are several warning signs of domestic abuse. Many times, she said, these characteristics are not perceived as traditional abuse.
