Area children sat down Monday for a special story time with police at the Monessen Public Library.
The first Cookies and Milk with a Cop event attracted a handful of area youth, who eagerly filled the story-time carpet as Monessen police Chief Jim Smith spiritedly read “Policeman Lou and Policewoman Sue,” a children’s book outlining the daily activities and special friendship between the police officers on duty as they write tickets, help people cross traffic and solve crimes to keep the community safe.
Following the story, Smith talked to the children about general safety tips, the police department and police officers who may be reading to them in the future.
Through a partnership with the police department, the library decided to implement the program, inspired by the national program Coffee with a Cop. The goal of the program is to give area children time to interact with local law enforcement in a fun environment.
Keystone Bakery donated cookies for the event, which will take place with a new representative from the police department at 6 p.m. the third Monday of each month at the library.
