The Clairton Bears face a familiar foe Friday in a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart comes calling to nearby West Mifflin, after the game was moved due to expected poor field conditions at Neil C. Brown Stadium.
The two teams have some history, most recently from last season, when the Chargers ended the Bears’ season in the semifinals.
Bears head coach Wayne Wade is downplaying the prior meeting.
It’s a new season and Clairton is the top seed in this year’s playoffs after winning the Eastern Conference and knocking off rival Jeannette last week.
“Our number one goal every season is to finish as conference champions,” said Wade. “We feel like if we finish as conference champs we set ourselves up for one of those top seeds and have a home game.
“Last year’s team is last year’s team,” Wade continued. “You still have that in the back of your mind but we’re just focused on coming out and playing our style of football. It doesn’t matter who (the opponent) is.”
