Tomorrow night, Monongahela gets another chance to play a special role in Sgt. Vernon Hamilton’s voyage from the Mon Valley to World War II and back again.
“Homecoming: Sgt. Hamilton’s Long Journey,” a 30-minute documentary written, produced and directed by Ringgold graduate and WQED Executive Producer David Solomon, premieres 7 p.m. Wednesday in Ringgold Middle School’s auditorium. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
Hamilton, a 19-year-old Army Air gunner mechanic from Monongahela, was on a light bomber in World War II when his plane was shot down in March 1945 in a combat mission from France to Germany.
The plane and remains of Hamilton and his fellow crew members were declared unrecoverable for decades.
Hamilton’s 1943 Monongahela High School ring was discovered at the excavation site and it was a key component in identifying his remains.
