Shoppers at Foodland in Monessen will hear the familiar sound of bells from Salvation Army volunteers.
The bell ringing for this year’s holiday season began Friday. For the first time, the fundraising efforts will include an electronic credit card payment option.
Once the week of Thanksgiving hits, volunteers with their seasonal bells will be positioned in front of the famous red kettles at additional locations across the area.
Along with Foodland, bell ringing will take place at Walmart, Shop ’n Save and Giant Eagle during the holiday season.
Capt. Sue Thwaite of the Salvation Army Mon Valley Citadel said the organization has set a $56,000 goal for this year, hoping to top last year’s total of $55,000.
“We are definitely looking for volunteers,” Thwaite said while ringing the bell at Foodland. “We are already scheduling into December.”
