For months prior to the Nov. 5 general elections, municipal and school board candidates spent countless hours campaigning and getting their messages across to voters.
And on Election Day, hundreds of volunteers and workers at the polls spend all day counting votes and transporting election results to ensure a fair and accurate voting process.
But for two municipal council candidates in Jefferson Hills, the months of hard work to win the third available seat on council could come down to the simple process of drawing numbers.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the Allegheny County Election Bureau website showed Republican Melissa Girman-Steffey and Democrat Keith Reynolds were tied with 1,171 votes (17.03%), a number which has not changed since Nov. 6.
“They had me ahead by five votes when I went to bed on election night,” Steffey said. “When I woke up, it was a tie. Best case scenario, it’s just human error.”
On Wednesday afternoon, the election bureau held its return board procedure at its downtown Pittsburgh office for the two candidates in an effort to break the tie.
