The unsung hero of Clairton’s return to the top of the WPIAL Class A football mountain wasn’t an individual player or coach. It was the Bears’ defense.
Three interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. Three sacks, combining for 17 yards lost.
The Bears held Sto-Rox to seven points in the first half, allowing just 115 total yards of offense. Though the Vikings fought to keep the game competitive in the second half, Clairton’s defense was just too tough.
“Our pass defense played well today. We played a lot of nickel and dime coverage. We had safeties over the top and were able to press up and get after guys and they did well,” said Clairton head coach Wayne Wade, whose team won the 14th WPIAL championship in program history with a 41-19 win over the Vikings Saturday at Heinz Field.
