Washington County clerk of courts charged with theft

The Washington County clerk of courts is free on $100,000 unsecured bond after allegedly stealing more than $96,000 from the office.
The charges against Frank Scandale, 51, of Canonsburg were filed Thursday, including a felony charge of theft by failure to make required deposits, eight counts of theft by unlawful taking and one count of misapplication of entrusted property and property of government or financial institutions.
According to the affidavit filed with the charges, an investigation was launched following the annual audit conducted by the Washington County Controller’s office. The audit found 18 missing deposits as of Dec. 31, 2018, totaling $62,602.85.
Because of those findings, the controller’s office continued the audit into 2019, finding an additional six missing deposits. They include $50,534.04 in currency and $39,714.19 in checks. The total amount missing came to $96,716.04.
