Mon Valley residents once again have something warm and cozy to be thankful for this year.
Five years ago, Monongahela resident Kim Velmer started a winter community project in memory of her mother, Norma Dennis.
What started out as a small tribute to one of the most inspirational women in her life can now be seen every year as scarves begin to take place of leaves on the trees in Chess Park.
The Scarf Project began Saturday, when Velmer and several volunteers started nestling scarves throughout the branches of trees to ensure residents have access to winter clothing.
The Scarves Project was launched five years ago after Velmer saw a similar initiative in New York City’s Central Park. She brought the idea to the city and it has been embraced ever since.
