Like many other districts in the Mon Valley, South Allegheny has announced it will participate in the Flexible Instruction Day program offered by the state Department of Education.
“This means that on days when situations like winter weather or a building emergency require us to close our schools, we can provide instruction to our students at home rather than in the classroom,” Superintendent Dr. Lisa Duval said in a letter that has been posted to the district website. “Think ‘alternative snow day.’”
“The state will count this as a full day of school and we will not have to make it up during the school year,” Duval wrote. “The district has been approved to use up to five of these days this school year. We are planning to use these Flexible Instructional Days throughout the remainder of this school year, as needed.”
With the passage of Act 64 of 2019, section 1506 was added to the Public School Code. Public school entities now have the opportunity to develop a Flexible Instructional Day program, enabling the public school entities to meet the 180 instructional day requirement.
