Monessen’s miscues prove costly in season-opening defeat

It was not the start the Monessen girls basketball team expected.
As a matter of fact, the team that took the court Friday looked more like last year’s squad.
Turnovers, poor free throw shooting and missed layups doomed Monessen as it fell in its season opener, 46-34, against Imani Christian.
The Greyhounds (0-1) committed 34 turnovers, shot 7 for 25 from the charity stripe and had an abysmal shooting night.
“We’re not shooting well, I thought that would improve,” Monessen head coach Janine Vertacnik said. “They’ve played enough ball over the summer and we shoot a lot. They rush their shots; we had girls open in the first half and we didn’t see them. In the second half we throw to them and they’re covered.”
