The Belle Vernon Area girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 61-27 triumph over Sto-Rox to close out its weekend at the McKeesport Tipoff Tournament.
Freshman Jenna Dawson led the Leopards in scoring with 13 points, while senior Rachel Wobrak had 12 points for Belle Vernon (1-1).
The Leopards used a balanced attack, flexing their offensive muscle to take a 10-point lead, 19-9, at the end of the first quarter. Belle Vernon’s offense continued to build, while the defense shined the rest of the way.
While both teams struggled to find any rhythm with a high volume of fouls called, the Leopards didn’t let it rattle their defensive effort. BVA didn’t allow Sto-Rox to score in double-digits in any of the four quarters.
“We do like to be aggressive, but we could always be smarter,” BVA head coach Ronnie Drennen said. “They called a lot of fouls, hand checks, I just think we can watch film, learn and grow from that.”
