A fast start defensively and a balanced scoring effort were too much for visiting Brentwood to stop as the Belle Vernon Area girls basketball team roared to a lopsided win Tuesday.
Rachel Wobrak led a trio of double-digit scorers and the Leopards nailed 12 3-pointers to roll to a 62-33 win.
“It was very important for us to get off to a good start,” BVA head coach Ronnie Drennen said. “This is a great memory for the freshmen to have for their first game on their home floor and I really think this win gives us a bunch of confidence moving forward.”
A big part of the Leopards’ start was because of their defensive play. BVA forced 15 turnovers in the first quarter alone, allowing them to run out to a 21-3 lead by the time the period expired.
The Spartans finished with 36 turnovers in the game.
“The biggest thing we wanted to do was speed the game up. I didn’t want to play against their 3-2 zone, so I wanted us to get into transition and create chaos,” Drennen said.
