California overcomes early woes to topple Carmichaels

Coming into Friday’s Section 2-2A opener against Carmichaels, California coach Aaron Balla knew it wasn’t going to be easy.
The Trojans were playing their third game in four days, and the offense wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty yet.
But Cal battled around a cold-shooting first quarter, relying on its team speed on defense and its balanced scoring to pull away from Carmichaels in the second half for a 51-38 victory.
“Our shots were not falling in that opening quarter,” Balla said. “I think we just needed to get our legs after playing three games this week. Carmichaels came out aggressive and they were very disciplined on defense. We had to fight for all of our points and our goal was get some guys going on offense. I think our team speed won us this game.”
