In a two-point loss to Baldwin last week, the McKeesport girls basketball team missed 16 shots from the free throw line.
Because of that less than ideal statistic, head coach Eric Smith said a concentrated effort was placed on free throw shooting at practice over the last week.
Despite the extra work, the Tigers once again struggled from the charity stripe in a 47-40 loss to Southmoreland in a key Section 3-4A matchup at the Neenie Campbell Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
The Tigers (3-2, 1-1) shot just under 50% (12 for 25) from the free throw line in the loss. Trailing by as few as one point with under five minutes to go in the game, McKeesport went to the line eight times and hit just two foul shots.
“We still missed a ton of foul shots and I don’t know (what happened),” Smith said. “It was more than that, though. The last three minutes of the game, we were down three and we just weren’t focused; we were trying to call traps and we just lost it. That’s surprising because we have a lot of experience.”
