‘Cease the grease’ to avoid ‘fatbergs’

With the start of the holiday season around the corner, Pennsylvania American Water wants to remind residents not to invite fats, oils and grease clogs to holiday gatherings.
With more people preparing large meals, things like turkey, gravy and all the trimmings come with fats, oils and grease that can stick to the insides of pipes if poured down the drain, causing clogs that may lead to sewer overflows and backups.
Those can be costly for residents and problematic for local authorities.
The campaign to raise awareness of such issues began prior to Thanksgiving.
More recently, Gary Lobaugh, external affairs manager for Pennsylvania American Water, said an incident in Queens, N.Y., showed how dangerous the problem can be.
