Elizabeth borough police officers joined forces Friday with departments from across the region to make a difference at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
This was the first year the department participated in Presents from Police, gathering gifts from members of the community since the beginning of the month to take to children who will be spending the holiday in the hospital.
“It’s the right thing to do,” Chief William Sombo said. “We want to be part of the community again.”
Sombo said the community responded, filling an entire room at the police station with new, unwrapped toys for the children.
Criteria for the presents was broad: toys for boys and girls from birth through age 17, but no bikes, no toys depicting weapons or violence of any sort, no stuffed animals with detachable parts and only those with sewn-on eyes.
The response from the community included toy trucks, dolls, blocks, a tea set and even ride-on toys.
