Clairton fired on all cylinders early in the fourth quarter Thursday night, nearly overcoming a sluggish first half effort by cutting its deficit to five and shifting the momentum in its favor.
The Bears, who trailed by 14 points at halftime before trimming the gap to 11 after three quarters, scored the first six points of the final frame to make it a 47-42 game with 5:28 to go.
It was all for naught, however, as Southmoreland countered with a large run and pulled away for a 67-50 victory over the Bears on day one of the CFSBank Holiday Classic at Charleroi High School.
The momentum shifted back in favor of the Scotties (2-5) when Riley Comforti went to the free throw line to shoot two.
Before the foul shots, a technical foul was called on Clairton, allowing Comforti to shoot four shots from the charity stripe.
