McKeesport council recently approved a new contract with the city’s firefighters.
The four-year pact requires firefighters to pay a deductible for their health coverage, something the members of McKeesport Firefighters International Association of Firefighters Local #10 didn’t have to do under previous contracts.
The new contract runs through 2023 and guarantees yearly raises for the department’s full-time employees. Firefighters will see a 3% increase in their pay this year, followed by a 2% raise in 2021 and 2022 and a 1% raise in the final year of the contract.
Mayor Michael Cherepko talked about the contract at length during the council meeting.
“Through negotiations, I really believe this is a fair contract on both sides,” Cherepko said. “There were concessions — let’s say — on both sides. I think both sides understand the situation of the city of McKeesport.”
