While most high school basketball players spend Saturday nights hanging out with friends or resting up for the rigorous week ahead, Joey Caruso spent his time off shooting inside Charleroi High School’s gym.
A less-than-ideal performance in a non-section loss to Waynesburg Central Saturday prompted the senior to spend 90 minutes figuring things out to get back on track.
“I went 1 for 10 from 3-point range, so I said there was definitely something wrong,” Caruso said. “I got in the gym and coach (Bill Wiltz) helped me out a lot.”
The time spent in the gym paid off for Caruso as he poured in a season-high 30 points to lead Charleroi to a 74-34 victory over Brownsville Tuesday in Section 4-3A play.
“He deserves it,” Charleroi head coach Bill Wiltz said. “He wanted to straighten himself out and the results were there. You don’t get a lot of high school kids that do that. He wants to totally improve, he wants to help the team and we want to go deep into the playofs and he knows he’s one of the keys to that.”
