There is officially a new assistant police chief in the City of McKeesport.
Mayor Michael Cherepko announced during Wednesday’s council meeting that Mark Steele, who was previously working as a lieutenant for the McKeesport Bureau of Detectives’ Narcotics Unit, has been promoted to assistant chief, effective immediately.
The position has been vacant since Jan. 20, when former Assistant Chief Chris “Chip” Olinsky formally retired.
Olinsky was not present at the meeting. Chief Adam Alfer said he was grateful to Olinsky for his more than two decades of service to the city and remarked that Olinsky decided to retire to “pursue future opportunities and endeavors.”
Steele, a lifelong McKeesport resident, has been a full-time McKeesport officer since 1999, but he worked as a part-time officer for around three years prior to that.
