New Eagle council appointed a new member Tuesday night.
Following a unanimous vote, resident Dennis Walters was appointed to the vacant two-year seat.
Walters, who has been attending council meetings for the past three years, believes his work experience as an engineer and project manager will be an asset.
Walters was one of four residents who submitted letters of interest for the position. In addition to Walters, letters were received from former councilmen Bill Sherry and George Tirpak and David Thompson. All were in attendance at the meeting except Thompson.
Two other new council members are working toward making a family-friendly recreation space in the borough. Councilwomen Tanya Chaney and Saundra Bobnar will be working to revitalize the Maple Avenue ballfield. The space currently has an older playground and basketball court. The baseball field is not used.
“The dugouts are in bad shape and kids are using them for other things that they shouldn’t be used for,” Bobnar said.
The board passed a motion allowing Chaney and Bobnar to come up with a plan and apply for funding.
Borough president Jack Fine said that anything will be better than what the space is now.
“All we do now is cut the grass there,” he said.
Chaney said that there are no specific plans, but they want to provide a green family-friendly space for the residents.
In other business, council approved revisions to the junk vehicle ordinance. Solicitor Tim Berggren said the revisions include small changes, such as notifying the borough secretary of a junk vehicle and to not send the notices as certified mail, because the recipient has 10 days to rectify the situation. With the certified letters, the letters would sit past the 10 days.
