The “We Can Do It! World War II” traveling exhibit from the Heinz History Center had its official opening Friday evening in the Donora Public Library Community room.
Donora is the last stop in a two-year tour for the traveling exhibit, which is being displayed in affiliation with the Donora Historical Society. Friday’s event also featured a “taste of Donora” buffet, with food from eight different restaurants.
“Our town is beginning to flourish,” Mayor Jim McDonough said. “There is not one night you can’t get dinner in Donora for the first time since the ’80s,”
McDonough said he remembers his father and uncles telling him their stories of their involvement in World War II and he remembers vowing to never forget.
“Over time, I lost them and I lost their stories, so I thank the library and the historical society. I can come here and remember those stories,” McDonough said.
Andy Masich, president and CEO of the Senator John Heinz History Center said that is the purpose of the museum, as well as the traveling exhibits.
“The Donora story is so intertwined with this one,” Masich said. “We like to think at the Heinz History Center that we are the ‘people’ museum.”
