Clairton Coke Works settlement finalized

The Allegheny County Health Department announced Monday that it has finalized the settlement agreement and order with U.S. Steel that was issued in June 2019.
The agreement addresses ACHD’s 2018 enforcement order and all subsequent penalties issued against Clairton Coke Works from 2018-19. It does not address two fires at the Clairton Coke Works facility — one on Dec. 24, 2018 and another June 17, 2019 — that caused shutdowns of pollution controls and touched off months of heightened concerns over emissions from the site.
Penalties associated with those fires and related emissions violations will be addressed through a federal lawsuit brought by Pennsylvania environmental groups, Clean Air Council and Penn Environment, along with the county health department.
The settlement agreement requires the company to meet the improvement criteria of the 2018 enforcement order, which includes $200 million in plant improvements.
