After police Chief Eugene Lipari called the parking situation at the corner of Speer and Baltimore streets “a hazard,” North Belle Vernon Council gave permission to paint a curb yellow at the intersection.
Lipari has been receiving complaints from Belle Vernon Area School District bus drivers who say they’re having trouble making turns at the four-way intersection because of cars being parked at the corner on the right side of Speer Street.
Speer Street is a residential road that runs parallel to Broad Avenue, which is considered the borough’s main street and is home to its business district. Baltimore is a cross street.
Lipari said residents and motorists have complained that traveling east on Speer toward Baltimore is hazardous because they can’t see cars turning off Baltimore and onto Speer Street — a two-way road — because parked cars are blocking their visibility.
“It’s a hazard,” Lipari said. “Nobody can see traffic coming up, and there is no room for buses to swing that turn.”
