The individual high school wrestling season gets underway with the Class 2A section championships today followed by the WPIAL championships on Saturday. Both will be held at Canon-McMillan High School.
The top four wrestlers at each weight class from the three sections will advance to Saturday, then the top seven will move on to the Southwest Regional next weekend at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The five Mon Valley schools should be well represented on the medal stand with seven wrestlers getting the top seed in the 14 weight classes.
Two-time state champion Thayne Lawrence (11-0 this season) will try to win his fourth section title before attempting to become only the 29th wrestler to win four WPIAL Championships. He is the No. 1 seed at 160 pounds in Section 3.
Lawrence has a 107-12 career record and is a returning SW Regional champion.
