Proposed skate park in Donora sparks concern

Donora council expressed concern last week over a proposed skate park and the way fundraising started for a project that isn’t approved.
Chantal Bey, who founded Strive for a Better Tomorrow and the Strive and Thrive Center of Hope in Donora, approached council at Thursday’s meeting to talk about what she is calling a five-year plan.
In October 2019, Bey said, the young people she works with came up with the idea of building an outdoor skate park. She sent an email asking for a motion to be put on the agenda for Thursday, but it wasn’t there. Borough administrator Terri Petrosky didn’t get an email from Bey.
Over the past few months, Bey said, she has researched skate parks — how much they cost and the benefits they provide for towns economically and socially. If it comes to fruition, Donora would have the only outdoor skate park in Washington County, Bey said.
Bey said there are funds available for skate parks through the Tony Hawk Foundation, which offers grants for public skate parks in low-income areas across the countries “to enrich the lives of youth through skateboarding,” according to the foundation’s website.
