California boys head coach Aaron Balla thought he had his team ready to play on Saturday.
The days leading up to California’s playoff matchup against Shenango showed signs of a prepared, focused team that was ready to battle, and maybe ready to pull the upset. When play started, though, the Trojans’ preparation went to the wayside.
Shenango dominated California, largely due to a full-court press that forced loads of turnovers and subsequent easy buckets.
The end result was a 71-51 victory for the Wildcats in the first round of the WPIAL 2A playoffs.
“These kids battled, but I just think it’s an eye opener when they get to this level because it’s a big stage,” Balla said. “We planned all week. We scrimmaged a couple teams, working all of our offenses and defenses. So it took me by surprise when they reacted negatively because we did what we needed to do to prepare them.”
