Late in Monday’s WPIAL Class 4A first-round game, Belle Vernon Area seemed like they were about to snatch the momentum.
A Rachel Wobrak basket just cut Freeport’s lead to one.
Then the moment slipped away with a burst from the referee’s whistle.
A foul called against the Leopards led to free throws for the Yellowjackets and time eventually ran out as No. 7 Freeport escaped North Hills with a 44-38 win over No. 10 BVA.
“This is the game I kind of expected. The way everything was happening, low-scoring, it played right into what we wanted,” BVA head coach Ronnie Drennen said. “I thought we had our moment right there in the fourth. We needed to get one more stop there. But we had a foul instead of a bucket when we needed it most.”
