The Boy Scouts of America Laurel Highlands Council announced this week it does not anticipate the national organization’s bankruptcy filing to “have any direct impact on the local Scouting experience.”
The Laurel Highlands Council serves nearly 17,000 youth members and 5,000 volunteer adult leaders throughout its multi-state footprint in Western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland and parts of West Virginia.
Locally, the council serves The Mon Valley District, which includes troops in Belle Vernon, Bentleyville, California, Carroll Township, Charleroi, Coal Center, Donora, Finleyville, Eighty Four, Elco, Ellsworth, Fallowfield Township, Monessen, Monongahela, New Eagle, North Charleroi, Rostraver, Speers, Union Township and Washington Township; and the Lackawanna District, which includes troops in Elizabeth borough, Elizabeth Township, Glassport, Liberty and Lincoln boroughs, McKeesport, Port Vue, South Versailles Township, Versailles, White Oak and others.
The Boy Scouts of America urged victims to come forward Tuesday as the historic, 110-year-old organization filed for bankruptcy protection in the first step toward creating a huge compensation fund for potentially thousands of men who were molested as youngsters decades ago by scoutmasters or other leaders.
