Three local wrestlers punched their tickets to the Class 2A state tournament in Hershey, six others won Class 3A section championships and 19 more advanced to the Class 3A WPIAL tournament over the weekend.
Frazier’s Thayne Lawrence and Elizabeth Forward’s Ryan Michaels powered their way through the 160 and 120 pound brackets, respectively, as both successfully defended their 2019 championships at the Class 2A Southwest Regional at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Each had pins in three of their four victories, including both championship matches.
Lawrence (21-0), a Lehigh recruit, won by a third period fall over St. Joe’s Keegan Rothrock in the 160-pound final.
Losing 5-0, Rothrock (33-6) chose the down position to start the third period and never made it back to his feet. The Commodore senior picked up the fall at the 5:32 mark.
