With Jefferson Hills borough council seeing an influx of new members during the past few months — three in January and one in December — the borough is taking steps to open lines of communication with the West Jefferson Hills School District to allow the boards to work together.
At the school board’s meeting Tuesday night, council president Karen Bucy took the first step by alerting school officials of two opportunities where the two entities can join forces: the borough’s upcoming Clean-Up Day and the recruitment of volunteer firefighters.
“I’m speaking not only as a citizen of West Jefferson Hills but also as the president of Jefferson Hills council,” she said. “We at council do not believe that there is a dwindling sense of volunteerism in this community.”
The borough’s Clean-Up Day is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon April 25.
“I have been a person who does not like garbage,” Bucy said. “For over 30 years, I’ve been cleaning up garbage along the side of roads. When I’m driving around this community on Old Clairton Road, Gil Hall Road, Coal Valley Road, Elliot Road and Payne Hill Road, I see nothing but garbage and we need to clean it up.”
