The Belle Vernon boys basketball team accomplished more than anyone could have anticipated this season.
The Leopards’ run to the WPIAL Class 4A championship game, which included victories over third-seeded Quaker Valley and the three-time defending 4A champions from New Castle, showed how wrong many of the naysayers were.
That run, however, came to an end on Saturday as sixth-seeded Belle Vernon Area suffered a 72-54 loss to top-seeded Highlands in the title game at the University of Pittsburgh’s Petersen Events Center.
The loss put a damper on an outstanding performance by Leopard sophomore Devin Whitlock, who led all scorers with 25 points. He also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the second quarter with one of his trademark drives to the basket.
