While the coronavirus has not yet been found in Westmoreland County, the Monessen School District is already making contingency plans.
A letter will be sent home to parents today detailing the precautions being taken in the district, including extra cleaning procedures, the availability of sanitary wipes in school buildings and other measures to prevent the spread of the disease making its way around the globe.
“As we see the coronavirus moving into Pennsylvania, the Department of Education provides us with updates,” said Dr. Leanne Spazak, the district superintendent. “We are discussing contingency plans if we have to close.”
Spazak said the district does not have laptop computers for each of its students, so remote learning is not necessarily an option.
Coronavirus awareness was evident Tuesday as elementary students were recognized for their achievements with Student of the Month awards. The youngsters fist-bumped the board members instead of the more traditional handshake.
