Ramont Small never thought it would take him this long to be a head varsity football coach.
He spent 26 years as an assistant coach at several area schools, including Monessen, Ringgold, Charleroi and Geibel.
At age 47, now that he finally is running his own program at Brownsville, it doesn’t bother him that he has one heck of a rebuilding job in front of him.
Small, a 1990 Ringgold graduate and former star at Akron University, can’t hide his excitement about being the head coach of the Falcons. He hit the ground running after being hired in January and hasn’t stopped.
“The first thing I want to do is work with the midget league and middle school programs because that’s where the future is,” the Monongahela resident said. “And I’ve been working hard to get more interest in the high school and I think it’s working.
“Last year, I think they ended the season with around 27 or 28 players. Right now, I have close to 40 kids in the weight program. We go three days a week and I’m getting at least 28 kids in there each time.”
