Flexible instruction dispute at Ringgold

Ringgold School Board decided last week to stop using flexible instruction days, although the district had applied to the Pennsylvania Department of Education and been approved to use more FID days.
A motion on the board’s agenda to approve the continued use of FID days stated, “it is the administration’s understanding that the PDE waiver application as currently written suggests that school districts will be expected to extend the school year until June 30, 2020. We believe that continuing to educate students is in their best interest and utilizing Flexible Instruction Days will help to prevent changes to our 2019-2020 district calendar moving forward.”
The board chose not to make that motion at all.
Instead, the board made a motion to stop all educational services to students beginning last Thursday and lasting through at least March 27. The motion also called for Superintendent Megan Marie Van Fossan and her staff to use the time to plan appropriately and to recommend to the board what educational services should be provided, if any. Van Fossan is also supposed to ensure all teachers, administrators, students and parents are properly advised of that plan.
